Wild Caught Salmon Vs. Genetically Modified Salmon and Farm Raised Salmon
In short if you’re against GMO and Farm Raised Salmon, when you’re looking to buy you want to buy Wild Caught Salmon.
Wild Caught Salmon eat krill, which turns their skin pink due to the red algae the krill love to eat.
Farm Raised Salmon.
Man-raised or Farm Raised salmon are fed toxic fish pellets also containing unsanitary and genetically modified foods. The color of a farmed fish is usually gray due to its diet and confinement.
With that said one of the reasons I put a picture of a Krill and mentioned Salmon’s skin turning pink is because on November 19, 2015, the FDA approves an application for AquAdvantage Salmon. Commonly known as frankenfish or Genetically modified Fish
Readers should know I’m trying to keep this post as short as possible. Readers can learn more about frankenfish or AquAdvantage Salmon by going FDA.gov or by going here: http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm473249.htm
Genetically Modified Fish or farm-raised salmon aren’t the problems, the problem is labeling.
Example if I want to eat Frankenfish I should know I’m eating frankenfish, the label on a product shouldn’t say Wild Caught Salmon when in fact it’s either Farm Raised or AquAdvantage Salmon.
A quote from FDA
In a statement, the FDA said it did a “comprehensive review” of the product and found it fit for human consumption. The agency said the salmon met several safety criteria, as well as being found to have a similar nutritional value to conventionally farmed salmon.
“The FDA has…determined that they have met the regulatory requirements for approval, including that food from the fish is safe to eat,“ said Bernadette Dunham, director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine.
Why the name Frankenfish?
AquAdvantage sought the approval after claiming it had found a way to make Atlantic salmon grow twice as fast as normal by modifying eggs with genes from chinook salmon and an eel-like fish called the ocean pout.
So what’s the big deal these fish are contained right?
Well… Environmentalists have long opposed the containment plan (which I highly recommend you research on your own), saying the modified fish could escape its containment and mix with wild salmon populations.
In short what environmentalist are saying Wild Caught Salmon could really be Wild Caught Frankenfish and no one would or could know the difference!
Also, there are environmental concerns that each individual should research on their own because I had this discussion with a lot of people and received a lot of different opinions.
In response to the Fish Salmon mixing the FDA stated the following:
The FDA said an escape is almost impossible because of redundant measures put in place to contain AquAdvantage Salmon in tanks. It also says that because the fish are sterile, they would not be able to breed with wild salmon.
In closing I would like to say based on my research I don’t have any issues with AquAdvantage Salmon or Farm Raised Salmon. My only concern is labeling I think all of us have the right to know what we’re eating. I think all the food we eat should be properly labeled and traceable to a location.
At all times we should also know what was used to feed or grow what we’re consuming.
It’s Conspiracy Theory Time!
My conspiracy theory is that governments don’t want the mass population to know there’s a shortage of anything. Because if people realized there we’re shortages especially in food more people would become more proactive, which would ultimately limit government control over what we eat.
Why would the government care about what you’re eating? Because most people live in big cities, these major corporations are funding political campaigns and they want to have a say in what you eat.
