The U.S. imposes steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada – May 31, 2018
Well, it’s here Canada, I’ve been warning my readers about this for years, as Canadians we’ve been taking advantage of American ignorance for a very long time. Even though this is happening under Trudeau’s Liberals the truth is it’s both the conservatives and the liberals are to blame. The problem, however, is Justin Trudeau’s lack of economic experience and not understanding his political platform and the position his party put Canadians in.
This is why you don’t intentionally run a deficit, it’s for the unexpected moments like this. If you’re an individual in debt what often goes overlooked is what indebtedness costs you. Being in debt means you’re at the mercy of the entity loaning you the money. I’ve been writing for a long time about the Bank of Canada and how Schedule 1 Canadian banks have basically been doing whatever they want regardless of what the Bank of Canada does.
Now, personally, I think the U.S will pay for this in the end because America companies have a bad habit of inflating prices the moment they’re giving a monopoly. The American steel companies will usually justify this by blaming their Unions. Because America is so capitalistic the effects are usually immediately felt by consumers who are now forced to buy American. With that said while that’s happening it could be up to 8 years before that tariff is lifted which for Canada could mean that our Steel industry is destroyed.
This is one of those issues show either the arrogance or the ignorance of the Liberals, who basically did nothing to remove the tariffs Canada has on American made goods. In regards to metal, what Canadians should first do is research what happens if a Canadian goes to America buys a car and then tries to register that car in Canada. what will happen? That Canadian will be hit with a tariff. On a smaller scale, let’s say a Canadian buys a T.V on Amazon.com what do you think will happen when that TV located in America gets into Canada? The Canadian will be hit with a customs/tariff charge.
NAFTA is supposed to mean the North American FREE trade agreement
People forget Donald Trump built buildings for a living, one of the materials required to build a building is STEEL, Aluminium, wood. In order to for Trump to be able to build massive structures, he would have been knowledgeable about all of these industries. Now, the more educated Liberals of years past, that understood industry would have known this instinctively, being, that most conservative politicians have been in the private sector they also would have known this and therefore would have gone to the negotiation table differently.
Justin Trudeau o the other hand is not familiar with this. Finance minister Morneau although he’s from the private sector he’s best known for having a consulting firm. Which is in the service sector, meaning that he’s not dealing with the type of business problems a real estate mogul would face. That shouldn’t be an excuse for Morneau, however, based on Morneau’s efforts to make the federal tax code subjective for corporations it shows me that he probably wasn’t the smartest individual in his company.
With many of these consulting firms, the tougher tasks are often outsourced to people more capable of dealing with complex issues, that said from my standpoint that’s why I would assume that in many respects Bill Morneau may not be as smart as some of the Liberal finance ministers of old.
How should Canada react to the steel and aluminum tariffs of the United States?
I’ve been telling Canadians for years we’ve been spoiled by brilliant minds. The Liberals in the 1990’s were smart, they made changes I didn’t agree with but at the time the Liberals made changes that made Canada economically competitive. I’m not a fan of socialism but I’m not a socialist denier either, socialism can work if the people behind it are extremely smart high IQ individuals. The problem with creating a socialist economy is when a not so smart group of politicians take over the economy everything gets exposed.
Now, when Stephen Harper took over the economy he was trying to get rid of the deficit, was Stephen Harper perfect? Of course not but he recognized the economy he inherited and also understood that Canadians, for the most part, weren’t ready for drastic changes, so what Stephen Harper did was he was trying to change the Canadian economy in small increments, I wasn’t a fan of this, but then again I didn’t have the will to run for public office. That said what this allowed was the entitlement mentality of Canadians to continue, enter Justin Trudeau who on his campaign platform met with Billionaires and promised to run a deficit.
Now the expectation for Canada is that America would hire Hillary Clinton or Ted Cruz to President. Either of those 2 presidents would be fine with Canada, but America hired Donald Trump a businessman, who has the mental capacity to handle high-stress negotiations with ease. a president that is combative with the media and makes swift decisions based on his own experiences with people. Liberals of old would have known who they’re dealing with and would have made concessions even if those concessions were temporary. Trudeau’s Liberals don’t understand this and approach negotiations from a place of privilege and arrogance, which to be fair may not even be intentional. My problem with Trudeau’s Liberals is there economic IQ’s, Canada is not a warmongering country, what this means to me is that all we as Canadians have to pay attention too is the economy.
Social justice and virtue signaling should never be the main position of Canadian politicians. My final thoughts regarding U.S. imposing steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada is that our government should make concessions. These concessions don’t have to be permanent but they should be considered. Oddly enough consessions could be if done right a boost to the Canadian economy.
