Although I tend to vote to the right politically, I completely understand why Canadians as a whole tend to vote left. As of June 2, 2016, the Premier of Quebec is Philippe Couillard whose a Liberal. I understand protectionism from Liberals, but protectionism isn’t supposed to be a conservative platform at least by my standards. So for me when I see conservatives taking a stance like this when the better option is simply doing nothing I completely understand why left-leaning Canadians wake up one morning and say why should we vote conservatives who conserve Liberal policies when I can simply vote full-blown leftist and vote in the Liberal or NDP?
Whether you agree with Trump or not, the reality is he’s woken up the inner conservative in America, he’s taken a firm stand and cut back on regulations and he is doing his best to make the economic playing field leveled. It doesn’t matter if you agree with his politics the bottom line is if he’s replaced by a left-leaning president in the future that left-leaning president will have to undo everything Trump has done which is going to be very time consuming and hard.
In Canada when the Conservatives leave office the Liberals simply increase spending, increase taxes and more regulations and take away more rights. When the Liberals do these things they’ll usually give into one demand like in this instance legalizing Marijuana which also allows the government to add even more regulations. Now, the vision behind these concepts for the Liberals are simple, we the Liberal party will give into the people’s demands as long as the people allow the government to dictate who will profit from these “freedoms” and “Liberties”.
Now from a conservative perspective regarding legalizing Marijuana there does not to be regulatory body deciding who can do what with Marijuana, what there should break are laws relating to individuals who break the laws to make sure they or their company can’t be protected from the laws because they’re too large of an organisation to be imprisoned.
Because as you know if there’s a big corporation that breaks the law, they don’t go to jail, their assets are seized, they’re given a fine and they’re able to continue business as usually, now if an individual breaks the same law that a large corps breaks that individual is treated much differently, that individual also won’t have the same resources to defend themselves. How this relates to tariffs is that Conservatives and Liberals shouldn’t both be engaging in protectionism. A conservative should be explaining to Ontarians how we can out-compete Americans, not how we can protect industries that aren’t profitable.
Why raise prices on Canadian goods? Why slow down the economy? Let Canadians decide what they will or won’t buy, in actuality this could be a time to force U.S manufacturers to lower their prices. As a Canadian politician make a few speeches tell Canadians that are farmers are hurting from what Trump is doing, remember if you can buy Canadian, tell Ontarians to remember to buy Canadian, you don’t even have to say anything bad about America, just tell Canadians that are farmers are important and they should buy Canada whenever they can. Remind Ontarians that we don’t have to stoop to the Trump administrations level. We’re bigger than that, buy Canadian. These problems are often easy to solve, but politicians often like to take the hard road.
Hopefully, everything will work out.
