Canadians to Trump: Don’t mess with us – June 7, 2018
The American media is big business, every week they’re onto something new, one of the reasons I didn’t think a tit for tat tariff was a good idea was simple, sometimes Americans forget that Canadians even exist, I knew some American’s that thought Canada was another U.S Territory. The big trade dispute for America is actually China, followed by the European Union. Without China, the prices for everything in the United States goes up. Even if you watch shows like Shark Tank or Dragons Den the common theme in those shows is to manufacture their items in China.

The other big player in this is the EU, American manufacturers export a lot of stuff into the European Union. By Trump going after them, he’s really putting himself in a position where without his supporters the U.S might actually have to concede. If you live in Canada it’s only right that you view the world from a Canadian perspective, but I have to remind my readers that Canadian exports into the United States only account for about 2% of American imports. American imports in Canada count for about 20% of our economy, what this means is if Trump chooses to wait for Canadian companies reliant on American consumers to survive may simply go to the United States.
In regards to Government subsidies, the Canadian government of Canada has to also remember that Donald Trump cut regulations. I think this is the portion of the Trump administration that goes overlooked. Trump didn’t just wake up one morning and say I’m going to charge all of America’s trading partners a tariff. Trump made sure he created a competitive investment-friendly economy for America so that when you started threatening other countries with tariffs they’d have to think twice before retaliating. For those of us that understand free market economics this is simple to see and comprehend, but for Left-leaning folks or economic puritans, this is hard for them to understand because they’re fixated on the emotional aspect to this.
How dare Trump accuse us of being cheaters many outside the U.S are saying, we’ll show Trump we’re not afraid of him. This is all fine and good if these tariffs come to a swift end, but if they don’t, I don’t think people understand how reliant the world is on the United States consumer. The U.S is also self-sufficient with U.S states competing with each other, it’s not to say that the U.S wouldn’t fall eventually if this Trump tariffs stayed in place, it’s that the EU, China, Canada, and Mexico would probably fall first. One of the reasons the Canadian dollar is so low is because it gives Canada a competitive advantage over the United States.
Trump’s tariffs effectively ended that economic advantage. As Canadians let’s hope that these tariffs don’t last for long.
Interesting times ahead.
