CUPW national president Mike Palecek said that contract talks made little progress in recent weeks despite the involvement of a special mediator whose mandate expired on the weekend.
“In spite of the continued assistance of the mediator over the weekend, Canada Post still refuses to address our major issues of health and safety, staffing, over-burdening, job security, a reduction in precarious employment, fair wages for all and a better work-life balance,” Palecek said in a statement. “While we remain at the bargaining table, ready to negotiate with Canada Post, we will not sit back in silence. This fight is not over.”
Canada Post Worker do understand they exist because of Canadians right? They do understand Christmas is just around the corner right? Doubt they care but hey it is what it is. Job Security? better work-life balance? over-burdening? fair wages for all? If life was really that hard for them wouldn’t their workers simply quit? I have a lot of friends who work in Health care, flipping over patients, dressing patients, bathing patients, finding patients, getting kicked, punched spat on and emotionally abused by patients and they don’t make $19+ per hour with a retirement plan that resembles that of a Canada Post worker on the lowerest tier. I hope Trudeau does nothing except for maybe talking about stripping Canada Post of their Crown Corporation status or selling off a large portion of it if CUPW wants to ruin Christmas for millions of Canadians let them. Trudeau forcing Canada Post workers back to work isn’t going to get him any more votes. Definitely won’t help him get votes from Canada Post workers. They need a wake-up call. They’re too powerful, what they’re asking for is ridiculous, if the workers feel exploited they should quit, don’t show up to work, refuse to work, what are they scared of anyway? What is it that they’ll be easily replaced or is it that they won’t find a retirement plan like what Canada Post is offering them anywhere else?
Unions belong in the Private Sector if you don’t like the pressures of working for the public don’t work in the public sector. The Police can’t do this, Health Care professionals can’t do this, Firefighters can’t do this, electricians can’t do this, furthermore, most of these other public sector professions aren’t in the business of being profitable at the direct expense of the consumer and businesses they serve. This is a mean-spirited, cruel and disrespectful to all public servants in Canada.
It should be a pleasure to work for the public if let’s say Canada Post was making less money than their private sector equivalents, a strike is understandable maybe? But no, that’s not what this is about, this is about flexing their muscles and it should stop. If CUPW wants to do this, Canada Post should be stripped of it’s Crown Corporation status and replaced! I have no problems with private sector unions striking, I had little to write about when GM workers in Oshawa went on strike, sure I thought it was stupid but they’re in the private sector, they can strike if they want to strike.
Canada Post is Crown Corporation, much of their operations can be replaced by the private sector. I don’t want Trudeau to force them back to work, what I’d like Trudeau to do if anything is to strip them of their Crown Corporation status or sell most of it off. Because clearly, this monopolized power they’ve been afforded is not working for them, so, take it away.
