Toyota Employees Be Warned Unifor National President Jerry Dias Has a Horrible Track Record – May 9, 2019,
Sure, I get it, some people like collective bargaining, the comradery, the money, the benefits w/e. I believe that people have the right to collectively bargain, but even if you’re collectively bargaining shouldn’t you hold your representatives at your union accountable if jobs are being lost? GM is getting smaller and smaller as is Chrysler. If these companies go belly up or they’re having financial problems, the Union should be kind enough to inform their workers of the current financial problems the companies are experiencing.
It’s a known fact that Ford is probably the only America auto-manufacturer with a decent reputation at this point, which obviously equates to lower sales, which obviously threaten the employees and their bottom lines. There are times when even employees have to consider being flexible, there are times when even the Unions may have to consider taking a pay cut. In a market-based economy, price go up and prices go down, if wage controls weren’t in effect wages would also go up and down based on market performance. Of course, this is no longer the reality and because wage prices can’t fluctuate if a company is having problems, it’s a good idea that the Union boss have a talk with the employees ahead of time about economic problems occurring in the company they work for.
Instead, what tends to be the case with Unifor are job cuts catching employees off guard, I’ve always asked the question, is there ever a time when a Union isn’t needed? Canada is pretty liberal when it comes to protecting the rights of workers, I’ve personally ever liked collective bargaining because I find that I get paid less than I would, working as an individual. I’ve made so much more money in the private sector avoid unions and going directly to the boss. I also hate collective bargaining because the lazy and incompetent workers also get included in the collective bargaining process which tends to make my life more difficult and my wages more stagnant. Lastly, I would feel irritated having union dues getting extracted out of my paycheck while at the same time having to serve 2 masters.
At the very least, however, what I’d expect from my union was for them to be business savvy which I found they weren’t. I’ve listened to Jerry Dias and in my opinion, he’s not a good leader, the numbers back me up and ever since he’s taken over Unifor in Auto manufacturing, it appears that jobs are lost not gained? Toyota is growing while GM and Chrysler are shrinking, now people could say well it’s because Toyota makes a better car? Well, correct e if I’m wrong but most of the recalls don’t happen in the manufacturing plants located in Ontario? So from my standpoint, it appears that it’s more that the union is making life impossible for their plants in Ontario, which is why they’re shrinking their presence here.
1 or 2 months ago Jerry Dias was calling for a boycott on GM? That seemed kind of silly to me, even GM keeping 300 jobs in Ontario was more of a sign that they want to employee Ontarians but they can’t stand the Unions. When you’re a leader sometimes you simply have to have honest conversations with the people you represent, it’s really that simple, if you continue to lie to the people you represent and use bully tactics on their employer eventually the employer who also has to answer to shareholders, is going to find ways to alleviate itself from your presence. That’s what I’m seeing here, now, of course, an argument can be made that the same thing is happening in the United States, sure, but Unifor is Canadian and it should be positioning itself to be a destination, not a place to avoid.
Is it purely a coincidence that Toyota who has avoided Unifor is growing its presence in Ontario while GM and Chrysler are shrinking theirs? Could the Unions be a factor, because I’ve read many articles that talk about GM’s union problems, which prevent them from restructuring, a simple conversation with workers, stating that maybe we have to be a little bit flexible because sales are lower than expected and the company wants to restructure? Yes, there would be push back by the employees, but what are they paying you for? They’re paying their union dues because they want job SECURITY. Below is an article you should consider reading because it basically points out that Union has been a failure.
