ABC Takes Jimmy Kimmel Live! Off the Air After Remarks on Charlie Kirk Killing — A Christian Perspective on Free Speech, Property Rights, and Accountability – September 18, 2025

Posted on September 18, 2025 by RichInWriters

In a decision that’s sparked controversy across the political spectrum, ABC has indefinitely pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! from its late-night lineup following comments Kimmel made about the assassination of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA.

While the situation has quickly devolved into a partisan talking point for both the Left and the Right, this article offers a Christian-centered perspective—focused not on political tribalism, but on freedom of speech, personal responsibility, and private property rights.

Let’s be clear: this is not an endorsement or condemnation of Kimmel’s views, nor is it a rallying cry for censorship from either side. Instead, we want to explore this moment through biblical principles and foundational truths—namely:

  • Freedom of speech is essential to human dignity.
  • Property rights must be respected—even when we disagree.
  • No man, political figure, or public commentator should be placed above God.

What Happened?

Jimmy Kimmel, who has long been a controversial figure in late-night television for his sharp political commentary, made several remarks in response to the killing of Charlie Kirk. On September 15 and 16, 2025, Kimmel said:

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them…”

“Many in MAGA-land are working very hard to capitalize on the murder of Charlie Kirk.”

These statements, which cast broad blame on millions of people, understandably struck a nerve—particularly given the national mourning that followed Kirk’s death. However, it wasn’t just public outcry that followed. ABC, owned by Walt Disney, along with several affiliate networks, decided to suspend the show indefinitely.

Nexstar Media Group, which carries ABC content on 32 affiliates, announced it would no longer air Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Sinclair Broadcast Group echoed that decision and even replaced Kimmel’s time slot with a tribute to Charlie Kirk.

A Christian View: Speech and Stewardship

As Christians, we defend freedom of speech—even when that speech is offensive or controversial. Why? Because truth cannot survive in a censored society.

John 8:32 — “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Jesus Christ Himself was condemned for speaking truth in a world that could not tolerate it. He was crucified not because He committed crimes, but because He spoke words that challenged the powerful and exposed hypocrisy.

That said, freedom of speech does not entitle anyone to someone else’s platform. ABC is a private company with private shareholders, and it has the right to decide what content aligns with its brand. This is where property rights—a biblical and constitutional principle—come into play.

Exodus 20:15 — “You shall not steal.”

You cannot steal another person’s platform, business, or reputation. And you cannot demand that a company give you airtime if your speech no longer reflects their values or economic goals.

Kimmel and Accountability

From a business standpoint, Jimmy Kimmel’s show had been underperforming for quite some time. According to Q4 2024 ratings, Kimmel consistently trailed behind competitors Stephen Colbert (CBS) and Jimmy Fallon (NBC). In this context, the controversy surrounding his comments may have simply accelerated an inevitable decision.

This isn’t censorship—it’s accountability.

  • ABC has the right to protect its brand.
  • Investors have the right to expect returns.
  • Viewers have the right to switch the channel.

If Kimmel now chooses to start his own platform—on YouTube, Rumble, or elsewhere—he should be free to do so. And we, as Christians, will defend his right to speak freely, even if we disagree with him.

A Warning to Both Sides

The reaction to this event reveals a deeper problem in our culture: both the political Left and Right have shown a tendency toward censorship when speech doesn’t align with their worldview.

Some conservatives cheered Kimmel’s removal while forgetting that President Donald Trump himself has called for censorship in the past. On the other hand, progressive leaders like Governor Gavin Newsom are now defending Kimmel’s free speech, despite supporting similar suppression when speech doesn’t align with Leftist values.

This hypocrisy is unbiblical and dangerous.

James 1:8 — “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

If you only defend free speech when it benefits your side, then you’re not defending a principle—you’re defending a position of power.

Mourning Charlie Kirk, Without Silencing Dissent

Many Christians are deeply mourning the loss of Charlie Kirk, a brother in Christ whose work impacted millions. His death is tragic, and the pain of losing a fellow believer should never be politicized. That said, Christians are also called to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them (Matthew 5:44).

We must respond with truth, not retaliation. Kimmel’s comments may have been reckless, but the Christian response is not to silence him—it’s to stand firm in truth, model grace, and defend both property rights and freedom of speech.

Final Thoughts: Jesus Over Politics

Ultimately, this situation reminds us that no man, political figure, or television host is our savior. Whether it’s Jimmy Kimmel or Donald Trump, Christians are not called to follow men—we are called to follow Christ.

Psalm 146:3 — “Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save.”

We must remain rooted in biblical truth, not the shifting sands of political partisanship. We must fight for a society where speech is free, property is respected, and hearts are transformed—not by laws or ratings, but by the power of the Gospel.

In Conclusion

  • ABC had every right to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! based on their brand values and business priorities.
  • Kimmel is still free to speak—just not on a platform owned by someone else.
  • Christians should oppose censorship, not because we agree with all speech, but because freedom is essential to the Gospel.
  • We mourn Charlie Kirk, honor his legacy, and continue to stand for truth, grace, and freedom in his memory.

Consider making Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior today.
In a world dominated by noise, division, and manipulation, Christ alone offers clarity, unity, and eternal hope.
He is the foundation that no media company, no government, and no political leader can replace.
Put your trust in Him.
