If you read the Old Testament and have some understanding of the Talmud, you would know that most Jews do not consider Christ to be the Son of God, and in this belief they align with Muslims. This leads some Christians to ask whether we are foolish for supporting Israel. After all, there are reports of Christians being spit on in Israel, so why are we defending and, in many cases, financially supporting people who by some accounts treat Christians poorly.
The answer, in my view, is quite simple. The welfare state. The welfare state supports many people around the world who openly hate Christians. Some Christians go on the offensive against Israel because others, like myself, refuse to do so. I do not believe Israel is the core problem. I believe Christians are often our own worst enemies.
We tend to remove ourselves from responsibility for global events and then become excited when we find an enemy to attack. One thing I found strange in Tucker Carlson’s interview was that, as an American Christian, he repeatedly referred to Israel as the Holy Land.
Christ’s Kingdom and Christian Responsibility
Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world.” John 18:36
The Jewish people have their own covenant with God, and Christians respect the People of the Book for preserving the Word of God through the Old Testament, which allows us to learn their history. However, Christians should not confuse property rights with the idea of a Holy Land. As Christians, our calling is to spread the name of Yeshua, Jesus Christ, and His message, filling the world with the Holy Spirit.
Like most ancient peoples, Jews maintain ancient traditions. As a Christian, I feel sorrow for a world without followers of Christ spreading His message. If Christians were to withdraw from the so called Holy Land, prosperity would not follow in the same way, because prosperity historically follows Christians wherever they go.
The Welfare State and Christian Compromise
The deeper issue Christians face is a troubling desire to allow atheists and non believers in Christ to rule over us. I am not certain whether Tucker Carlson’s intention was to expose the welfare state as anti Christian, or to discourage Christians from privately sending money to Israel. I do not know his motives, and it is not my place to judge. I do not believe in censorship. I leave Tucker to God. Jesus saves. I am a sinner just like Tucker.
Where I offer my perspective is this. The welfare state sends money to Israel, and Christians are known to be generous. I doubt that reports of Jews spitting on Christians will significantly change Christian giving. After all, many people who called themselves Christians committed terrible acts against Jews in the past using the name of Christ.
For me personally, this remains a matter of individual conscience. My real concern is the welfare state itself. I would like Christians to wake up from the trance of believing they should use politicians to redistribute money on their behalf.
Faith Over Politics
Beyond that, this issue is not a major concern for me. I do not believe in censorship. Yeshua teaches me to love God with everything I have and to love my neighbor as myself. That is a powerful commandment.
