Fueling Alberta’s Secession: Edmonton Riverbend MP Matt Jeneroux Leaves Conservatives to Join Liberals (February 19, 2026)

Posted on February 19, 2026February 19, 2026 by RichInWriters

It does not surprise me when I read that someone with the last name Jeneroux, representing Alberta, becomes just another likely bought off floor crosser. Please excuse this post being written void of emotion, but what appears to be a Conservative Quebecer representing a province where more than 30 percent of voters want to remove both Liberals and Conservatives is a dangerous position to be in if you are from Quebec.

Recently in America, during the Super Bowl, the NFL, which is attempting to create an international footprint, featured a halftime show with a Spanish speaking performer. Many Americans reacted strongly because they do not want to experience the language tensions Canada faces, where learning another language becomes a prerequisite to leading a predominantly English speaking nation.

If you are an English speaking Conservative Christian, socialism is a misguided subject. Most Conservatives believe socialism can be dismantled simply by discussing price controls, which we reject. However, among many French speaking secularists, socialism remains influential, and where socialism exists, censorship often follows.

Floor Crossing and Political Opportunism

As Christians, we put ourselves in the shoes of our opposition. Love thy neighbour as thyself. So if a so called Conservative floor crosses to a globalist Liberal, that person was likely never a true Conservative to begin with. Years ago, I encountered a local Conservative politician attempting to persuade me to support rent controls.

I do not put faith in politicians. However, timing matters. The Jeneroux decision came immediately after the controversial Quebec election. The Supreme Court overturned the Liberal win in the riding of Terrebonne. To me, this suggests that MP Matt Jeneroux likely switched for political or financial incentives, while Mark Carney frames the move as the will of the people.

The assumption appears to be that voters will forget what increasingly looks like election interference. Most people have already forgotten about Michael Ma, and they may forget about MP Matt Jeneroux as well.

Secession Movements and Federal Risk

The dangerous situation Mark Carney is playing with is that there are two active secession movements in Canada, and arguably a third in Saskatchewan. Both Saskatchewan and Quebec secession would be financially difficult. Saskatchewan operates many crown corporations in key sectors that would need to transition toward more market oriented structures if separation occurred.

Quebec cannot compel other North American regions to adopt French. If a Quebec currency were weak, it would need to transact in Canadian or US dollars, currencies it does not control. Given Quebec’s strong socialist leanings, that would present a serious economic challenge. Alberta, however, is in a very different position.

Alberta has one major obstacle, messaging. Matt Jeneroux’s decision to cross the floor just handed secessionists a significant argument. They no longer need to focus exclusively on economics. They can argue that Canadian votes no longer matter.

Canada’s Electoral Structure and Western Frustration

Canada’s democratic process lacks an Electoral College system. Mark Carney only needs to secure Ontario and Quebec to win nationally. This structural imbalance is a major reason Western separation discussions persist.

In contrast, the United States grants each state defined electoral representation in presidential elections. Americans can legitimately describe themselves as united states because each state holds electoral significance. States also exercise rights such as districting, which affects political representation.

Canada’s federalism challenge is not solely the fault of the provinces. It is rooted in federal design, and both political leaders and courts understand this structural imbalance.

Escalating Political Consequences

Because of this imbalance, Canada must allow secession as a constitutional option. The alternative is political instability and demagoguery. If Matt Jeneroux represented Ontario or Quebec, it might not carry the same weight, as those provinces are already overrepresented. In Western Canada, however, it feels like political disregard.

Mark Carney securing a majority government would likely secure expanded censorship policies. I have already observed content praising the Chinese Communist Party for easing Canadian travel to China, as if it were a reward. That is only the beginning of what may follow.

When communists took control of Venezuela, public behavior changed. Those who could leave departed. Those who remained adjusted to survive. Alberta’s secessionists now have an expanded argument focused not only on economics, but also on democratic legitimacy.

Conclusion

In this evolving political environment, concerns are no longer limited to fiscal policy. The debate now includes democratic representation, censorship, and structural fairness.

Consider making Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior today.
