The Bible does not explicitly mention a “Third Temple,” but prophecy interpreted as referring to one suggests a future, physical temple in Jerusalem will be built and functional during the end times/tribulation period.
Key scriptures, notably Daniel, Ezekiel, and 2 Thessalonians, suggest this temple will be defiled by the Antichrist (or man of lawlessness) before Jesus’ return.
Key Biblical Prophecies & Interpretations
The Abomination of Desolation (Daniel 9:27, Matthew 24:15): Jesus and the prophet Daniel speak of a desecration where the “abomination of desolation” stands in the holy place, necessitating a functioning temple.
Daniel 9:27
27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
Matthew 24:15
15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
The Man of Lawlessness (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4): Paul writes that the “man of lawlessness” will take his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4
3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:
Ezekiel’s Vision (Ezekiel 40-48): Describes a detailed, future temple with measurements, sacrificial systems, and a return of the Divine Presence, which many interpret as a third, millennial temple.
Tribulation Timing (Revelation 11:1-2): Mentions a temple of God during the tribulation that is measured, implying its existence.
Revelation 11:1-2
1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.
Contextual Beliefs and Alternatives
Rebuilding Efforts: While some Orthodox Jewish groups, such as those affiliated with The Temple Institute, are actively preparing for its reconstruction, the Bible does not detail the logistics of its construction.
Alternative Interpretations: Some Christians interpret “the temple of God” metaphorically, focusing on the Church or believers themselves as the temple, arguing that physical sacrifices are obsolete after Jesus’ sacrifice.
My thoughts on all of this as a Christian: it’s all about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Physical buildings mean nothing to me spiritually. I’m not a Jew, and if I were, I’d convert to Christianity. With that said, I’m not one of these people who condemn Israel for everything; ancient peoples to this very day still believe in CENSORSHIP. Israel, being an ancient people, is not pro-free speech.
Christ was a Jew, so as a Christian, the Jewish people obviously mean something to me. This doesn’t mean I put them above others, but as Christians we have to ask ourselves: why did God choose them? The answer I come up with is that, among all other groups, ancient Israel appears to be the only people who WROTE DOWN their story—the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Typically, when you read the history of a people, they make themselves the hero. They make themselves appear to be PERFECT, without blemish, ignoring the mistakes they made along the way. Most cultures are built on CENSORING mistakes, whereas as Christians, we know mistakes are how we learn—we have all fallen short.
So for myself personally, it wouldn’t surprise me if a building—a piece of physical property that some people might WORSHIP—would be the gateway for the Anti-Christ. For myself, this appears to be the story of the Jews over and over again, because if you know Jewish culture, because of the WEALTH of knowledge in the Bible, a lot of Jews become ATHEISTS, or they align with atheists, and atheists don’t have FAITH, or don’t have FAITH in the way a Christian believes in faith.
In prior eras, a lot of Jews in Europe, for example, were Communists, Marxists, and Collectivists, believing that CENTRALIZED power was the only way forward. In fairness to Jews in Europe, for example, they were DENIED property rights, so for them I could see how socialism or communism would be a good trade-off based on the circumstances. Do not confuse me with one of these Jew-bashing lost souls. I love Jews and I love all people; most importantly, I love Jesus.
As Christians, many of us have a hard time with DEMOCRACY, because, for example, Christianity isn’t popular all over the world, and you’ll notice when left-wingers especially get power, the first thing they implement is CENSORSHIP.
For example, a feminist will imagine that the PATRIARCHY needs to be abolished, and one has to ask: why does the patriarchy exist in the first place? Well, without a patriarchy, people who don’t believe in God see people WEAKER THAN them as their personal or collective PROPERTY—that’s why the patriarchy exists.
Men of God know it’s our job to protect those weaker than us; however, if those weaker than us want to CONTROL us, well, that does confirm that Jesus Christ is King and this is indeed a SPIRITUAL battle, and not a PHYSICAL battle.
Because, for example, if we as Christian men have a laissez-faire attitude toward everything, are we building the KINGDOM OF GOD, or a kingdom of LAWLESSNESS? Is anything and everything permitted in the Kingdom of God? And if there are rules, what makes you think that a physical BUILDING should be something to WORSHIP?
The Holy Spirit, Christ raised from the dead, eternal life—it’s spiritual, not physical. We leave these bodies, but clearly we have souls. As a Christian, I acknowledge the Old Testament, but I’m a follower of CHRIST, and the Christ I read about didn’t only spend time in BUILDINGS spreading the word of God. He took the gospel outside of buildings, outside of institutions. By Jewish standards, Christ BROKE the Sabbath, which I’d argue they turned into an institution repeatedly.
Yet, they couldn’t TRAP Him in life or after death. So when in modern times we write about anti-Christs being PRO-CENSORSHIP, that’s what we’re referring to. The devil loves ignorance; the devil loves making things FIXED. Imagine if we could only know God via a BUILDING. For example, in Islam, they have a pilgrimage to Mecca to walk around a BUILDING.
As Christians, worshipping PROPERTY or being in a HOLY LAND doesn’t resonate with us. With that said, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t allow God to lead you where He’s going to lead you, but there’s no FORCED compulsion for anything. Christ doesn’t FORCE you to submit to Him; that in and of itself sounds like something a WEAK person would do.
No—God allows you liberty and freedom, but for many who know Christ and backslide, they find their way back once they understand the LAWLESSNESS of the world. No matter how pretty those BUILDINGS are, if Christ is not there, those beautiful buildings will be places of MISERY, and they will always usher in ANTI-Christs. So if Jews build buildings to make them places of idolatry, which is inevitable in my opinion, then yes, I could definitely see a situation in which the anti-Christ comes from that BUILDING.
If you’re in real estate, for example, do you know how difficult it is to MAINTAIN a BUILDING? Because Jews are often the target of hatred, guarding this holy BUILDING is going to be exhausting.
Those of us who know the history of the Vatican, for example, remember how many times it was targeted for attack. In modern eras, not so much, because the Vatican is mostly an afterthought for most people. But because of the hatred for Jews, I’d imagine that there would be ongoing attacks against a third temple in Jerusalem, and at that point one would have to ask: is it worth it?
I don’t have ANY answers to any of those questions I proposed. I’m only pointing out the greatness of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who made us Christians not worship ANY idols.
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is enough for me.
Consider making Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior today.
