Rayfield says the tariffs would have cost households $3,800 and bypassed legal safeguards. Mayes adds the ruling was “very sweeping” and stronger than expected, calling the tariffs “tax increases” that would have “hammered” small businesses: “No president in U.S. history has used this emergency power to set tariffs.”
