Bernier has enough to start a new political party, Libertarian Party might lose membership – August 26, 2018,
I’ve always been on the fence with actually calling myself a Libertarian party member, my main reasoning for this revolves around the concept that being a Libertarian can be considered an extremist concept if it’s implemented as a political party. Politics aside Libertarianism at least from an economic standpoint can’t be beaten, however in a system based on freedom of thought where individuals via democracy can use the government’s resources taken by taxpayers to fund an idea or concept that the people during any particular period of time think is more important than economic thought.
So, the example I often refer to are times after a war. If there are Canadian war troops returning to Canada from a bloody war, would most Canadians honestly not want these troops to worry about having to pay for health care services, or finding a new job or building a new house, if there was a war what about the wives and children whose dead husbands can’t provide for them, I personally could imagine how democracy in that particular instance would opt to socialise particular programs for a period of time to accommodate the needs of the Patriots that risked their lives so we can have a country.
That said this is why in my opinion Conservativism from a political standpoint trumps Libertarianism because being conservative is more of a broader brush. The problem with conservatism and this will always be a problem, is when is there too much government. Currently, in Canada based on the positions taken by the Progressive Conservatives of Canada, it’s obvious the Conservative party lost its way. They made no fight when Trudeau raised tariffs, they made no fight when Trudeau sided with supply-side management, they’ve made no fight while private sector jobs have been replaced with public sector jobs. The only fight they’ve made is not to raise taxes.
That’s it, that’s all the Progressive Conservatives have done, they also stood up against M-103, with that said I’m certain Maxime Bernier will do all that the PC’s have done and a whole lot more. Now, will Maxime Bernier take on Libertarian values? No, and I hope he doesn’t because the truth about Libertarianism is that the world is not ready for it yet. Most of the Libertarians I know are very smart people who give issues a lot of thought, Libertarians often do a lot of reading and analyzing. They also fundamentally understand economics and how governmental policies can destroy countries social order.
Well, guess what Libratarians? The average Canadian can’t even conceptualize where your ideas are derived and as soon as a Libratarian speaks on the topic of race or culture and the social impacts on society guess what the average Canadian will label you as? A racist, a mean-spirited person, a cold-hearted person who doesn’t care about other people, a dictator, a fascist, corporatists, a nativist a tribalist and any other name they can label you as, to assure that your political movement doesn’t gain any traction.
Conservatism actually solves this problem, the problem with Conservatism is that it’s a constant fight, it’s continually pointing out inconsistencies and it’s not aligning with special interest groups who will guarantee you votes if you give in to their demands. The great thing about being a Libertarian is that you can see when a Conservative has sold out. One of the reasons the Bush’s in the United States are hated by so many Conservatives was because it was easy to see that they had sold out to special interest groups. Career conservative politicians are not a good thing.
Unfortunately for the Progressive Conservatives many of them have become career politicians which in real terms equates to them having a lot of meetings with special interest groups and not enough conversations with the public they serve. what this leads too are Conservatives who are out of touch with their base. This is the number 1 reason why Donald Trump as able to win the election in the United States and why his approval ratings with his base are still relatively stable. Trump is constantly communicating with his base, the Progressive Conservatives in Canada are not taking the same approach.
In many respects, I also notice that a lot of people that identify as Libratarians also do not talk to people who have differing opinions from them. Whether Libratarians want to admit it or not a lot of people on the surface view economics and Liberty as issues that should take a back seat to social justice causes. In order to break down these people’s defenses, you have to talk to them using words and stories they’ll understand. You have to be able to reach these people when a government program is failing. Libertarians have no idea sometimes that the words they spew sound like poison to a person who believes social justice triumphs over all.
To get to these lost leftists you have to be able to communicate free-market solutions to causes they believe are important. If as a right-leaning person you’re incapable of communicating this message well, in reality, you’re not very different from the Marxists who believe a big honest government is an answer to all of societies woes. I will be paying very close attention to what Maxime Bernier does and the political party he’s able to form. I genuinely think Maxime might be able to get 10% of Canadian voters, which in my opinion is enough to stop Justin Trudeau from destroying this country. Going forward it might be a better idea to chip away at the NDP instead of dethroning Trudeau. If Bernier’s party can replace the NDP I would be very happy with that.
Interesting times ahead.
