Canada plans to unveil a zero-emission vehicles strategy sometime this year while Trump moves to roll back requirements in 2021
In my opinion, based on the behaviors of the Consensus economic system we have in Canada why Canadians are fighting for NAFTA instead of taking a bilateral trade deal with the United States is beyond me. Maybe it’s because I’m looking too far ahead into the future but based on Canada’s history with NAFTA and even it’s current moves to unveil a zero-emission vehicles strategy while at the same time not being known to create any vehicle that’s Canadian owned, Canadian manufactured and distinctly Canada it’s odd that they would ponder making any rules of this magnitude until after the origin countries of vehicle manufacturers release their own zero-emissions goals.
GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda and other foreign entities that have manufacturing operations in Canada do not have to remain here if our rules are too stringent. If there were distinctly Canada made vehicles in Canada that gave us our own market independent of foreign entities I’d understand these regulatory moves, which as many of us know are nothing more than tariff or tax grabbing initiatives, then I would understand. But going forward Canada appears to be making itself a very unattractive market to do business with, well as far as jobs are concerned.
The regulatory environment in Canada is already ridged as is and every time I read a new article it appears that politicians are adding to the regulatory framework. These tariffs or customs fees Canada is using to build its safety net may come crashing down if jobs continue to leave Canada for more open markets. What I’ve been saying for some months now since Donald Trump became president is Canada better watch and pay attention to the mood shift of the American populace who may come to expect all future presidents to have an America first mentality.
Let’s say Trump is out in 4 years and is replaced by a Democrat who because of the mood of the country was forced to embrace some of Donald Trump’s economic policies? What this equates to is more problems for Canadian businesses doing business with America. Which ultimately leads to Canada looking to discover new trading partners, who may not be as favorable to our regulatory environment. Making matters worse will, of course, be the ongoing brain drain that’s already happening in Canada.
It’s very expensive to live in Canada and America is also experiencing a lack of tradespeople which is causing prices for tradespeople to go up, add that to the fact that the United States has a lower cost of living than does Canada fewer taxes and more options, cheaper housing and more capitalistic fight the powers that be attitude and Canada is may have to adjust the way it governs itself. A lot of different American celebrities said they would move to Canada if Trump got elected, well… almost all of them decided not too.
Canada is getting closer and closer to a crisis and I highly recommend that they adjust their policies accordingly or at the very least be more flexible with the ever-changing economic climate.
Interesting times ahead.
