In Canada I tend not to trust most of the think tanks, especially Quebec based think tanks that typically protect the interests of workers, who have unions, who lobby government to assure competition is controlled. Now I have to add that one of the things that alludes me about the telecom sector in Canada is if the justification of price gouging is based on National Security. This is one of the reasons I don’t get into this arena too often because clearly based on my research there’s price gouging, but the basis of the price gouging stems from Canadian companies not allowing foreign competition to operate freely within it’s borders.
What I mean by this and everybody knows this, if Verizon wireless came into Canada it would be a complete game changer, similar to when Wal mart and now Amazon entered the Canadian retail space, American companies tend to find ways outside of normal parameters of protectionist laws to lower their prices. So as an example Amazon currently is getting a lot of flack from U.S President Trump for low balling the Unionized United States Postal Service. Well the truth is, if the USPS didn’t have a monopoly on many portions of the courier industry within the United States, Amazon could actually wipe the USPS off the face of the earth.
It would be a similar story in Canada, if outside competitors were allowed to operate freely within the borders of Canada. Currently this isn’t the case which equates to a monopoly, which is why if I were the Montreal Economic Institute, I would ignore this issue altogether, because you don’t want information like what I’m mentioning in this posts to reach mass audiences. There’s only one reason to justify the high prices in Canada and it would be a national security, if it’s not national security we’re being price gouged, period, end of story. Foreign companies have been begging for years to enter into this space, they’re turned down every single time. I’ve already accepted the fact that there’s a good chance that every conversation I speak over the phone in Canada is being recorded.
Interesting times ahead…
