I was reading about this Guaranteed basic income for all Canadians and the one thing that stood out to me immediately is that there was more incentive to remain single than there was to be married. Below is what I read:
Ontario’s pilot model ensures that people or families with no income at all receive the maximum amount (for singles it’s $16,989, and for couples $24,027), which is reduced as income from other sources increases.
This has to be changed immediately for obvious reasons, the second flaw which is ridiculous in my opinion is the section that states the following:
People lose $0.5 of the basic income transfer for every $1 they make, meaning that anyone with earnings around $34,000 and over doesn’t get anything.
No, this is not going to work and this will cause a large amount of problems. If there’s a Guaranteed basic income for all Canadians EVERY CANADIAN WILL GET IT!! End of story, if this Guaranteed basic income for all Canadians is geared towards only one demographic what you’re going to create are people who measure the incentives of working vs. not working, which is the exact same thing that happens now, which is why when given the option people make common sense decisions. Why work a minimum wage job if I can make the same amount of money doing absolutely nothing.
Personally I don’t care if people want to do nothing with their lives, I also don’t mind these people getting welfare, my problem is if one group of people gets welfare EVERYBODY SHOULD GET WELFARE. YES, Including BILLIONAIRES.
Don’t call it Guaranteed basic income for all Canadians and play the game of preferential treatment, because that’s where people will start to scam and try to play the system. This is how you destroy nations.
Last point I want to point out is that I don’t want people getting paid weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, if they’re going to implement Guaranteed basic income for all Canadians it should be an annual check.
