LEAR Corporation auto parts workers in Whitby uncertain job security as GM set to close – June 27, 2019,
Unifor has been a complete disaster, as Toyota grows its presence in Ontario, GM shrinks theirs. In Europe, the Labor Unions work more closely with the workers than they do with the Government, in Canada, our Labor unions work in conjunction with the government and often get laws passed that help Unifor’s bottom line, not so much the workers they represent. A private sector unions are supposed to understand the hardships facing both the workers it represents as well as the solvency of the private corporation it’s trying to extort.
Being that GM similar to BMW in Europe can build cars else, it’s always important that the labor union present itself as friendly and flexible, not hostile and non-negotiable. Using the power of Kathleen Wynne, Unifor fought for a higher minimum wage, which in turn led to a lot of companies reliant on GM to raise their costs as well, Jerry Dias whenever he had the chance, also painted GM in a negative light even going as far as to tell Canadians to boycott GM? It’s called collective bargaining not collective bullying, the truth is, even though GM plants in America are closing, the Ontario plants probably wouldn’t have been a target had Unifor sat down and had an honest conversation with the people they’re supposed to represent.
GM has to restructure it’s getting killed and truth be told Canada probably would have its preferred destination because Canadians are known to build great cars, even Americans know Canadians are great at building cars, that’s part of the reason Toyota is growing its presence in Ontario, the problem and I’ve said this thousands of times are the labor unions in Canada are too powerful. Income taxes get paid because of employers, even if you’re the type of individual that believes in big government and higher taxation, understand that without big corporations the public sector will lose a chunk of money as income taxes generated from these big corporations disappear when they leave.
The Canadian dollar is low not because Canadian labor is worth less than American labor, it’s low because our high taxation makes us less appealing to corporations who wish to have their operations here. So lower loonie justifies companies like GM remaining in Canada, however, the mistake Unifor made was fighting to raise the minimum wage and making a stink about everything GM did that they didn’t agree with.
It’s important to remember that GM is a global brand, even if the Cars that came from the Oshawa plant were top quality, if consumer perception of GM products is negative, GM has to fight to rectify that and when they’re doing this they’re going to consider every option in reshaping their business model. Now again, the Oshawa plant and companies like LEAR Corporation related to the production, make an excellent product, but Unifor makes the Canadian worker appear to be too much of a risky bet.
Notice the article below, makes little mention of Unifor, the video below actually attempts to show Unifor in a positive light and GM the company contributing to income taxes in a negative light. Unifor can’t build cars, Unifor without its ability to extort privately owned corporations that produce things can’t pay income taxes. I’m certain that without Unifor, GM is still in Ontario, I’m also confident that a lot more cars would have been made in Canada had it not been for Unifor. Colin James and Jerry Dias to me don’t seem like the brightest people when it comes to running a business.
Anyway, in short, this is the disaster of Leftism, the people Unifor represents appear to be ignorant about how Unifor screwed them over and in regards to Lear, what I know Lear Corporation is trying to do now is they’re trying to find a new contract to make their seats, although the workers might assume that Lear Corporation may have a bunch of money, Lear corporation may have actually been in debt, just because workers got their paychecks b-weekly doesn’t mean that Lear Corporation wasn’t using debt to pay their bills. Kathleen Wynne and Unifor did little to explain to the people they represent the negatives associated with forcing a private corporation to pay employees and the Government more money.
