Male Presence in Teaching Continues to Decline in Ontario, Canada – June 2, 2018

One of the stats that’s very important to me is a stat found on the edu.gov.on.ca which writes about “Teachers, Administrators, and Early Childhood Educators in Schools – Full-Time Equivalent (FTE), 2015–16*”

The reason why I personally pay close attention to these stats is simple, there’s a huge impact on the type of education students receive as the gap between female and male teachers widens. In my opinion, it should be 50/50 especially if you’re talking about public school teachers. Now, if these stats were driven by the private sector I’d understand but no, these stats come from the public sector which from my viewpoint is alarming because if the stats were the other way around there would be a public outcry.

What’s worse for me is that Lone-parent families in Canada continue to rise meaning that for a lot of students they will have more interactions with female authority figures than they will male authority figures. Also what this could also mean is less dedication or focus on the trades. I know growing up in the public school system there was no option to get into the trades, I’m sure some public schools may have had it, but they weren’t available in my school, which was located in the poorer side of town.

There are certain skills that women have that men don’t have, and skills that men have that women do not have. People can pretend this doesn’t exist but it’s the children who will suffer in the end, furthermore, it’s the teacher’s social security net that will evaporate if they don’t address this issue very soon. I’m not a fan of tenureship and unions, especially in the public sphere as it doesn’t allow flexibility to solve problems.

Furthermore, it incentivizes teachers not to do more work than is required being that it’s almost impossible to replace them. It’s something Ontarians should look at because all it takes is for 1 generation not to be educated properly for everything we know and love to be destroyed.

Interesting times ahead.
