Mother calls for change after 16-year-old son killed in Toronto Community housing apartment building – August 7, 2019,
When people migrate to Canada, they might first end up in a place like P.E.I, Quebec, Nova Scotia or New Brunswick, but when they realize that their economic and welfare options are limited in these smaller Provinces, they tend to find their way to Ontario, namely Toronto. Personally I’m sympathetic towards this, however, many of these people aren’t well versed in basic economics, especially when it pertains to Toronto Community housing.
In case you didn’t know Government workers are expensive, Police are expensive, Government Parks and Recreation employees are expensive and I believe a large segment of them are unionized which makes them even more expensive, it’s also smart on the public servants part because when socialist politician makes a government decree that it’s the working taxpayers responsibility to pay for people who’ve usually opted not to seek employment or do jobs they believe are beneath them, you at times will get situations like Jane and Finch. In Toronto, Jane and Finch is known for criminal activity, unfortunately, another mother lost her child to gun violence, and as per normal she’s looking for the government or something external to solve the problem.
“I think we really have to step up Toronto housing and protecting the tenants, especially the buildings where there are issues,” said Coun. Frances Nunziata.
Kevin Marshman, CEO of TCH, said changes are currently underway to make residents feel safer, including lighting upgrades and the installation of licence plate cameras.
“We are going to have full-time security officers as part of 2195 Jane and Falstaff complex, so that there are officers circulating through those locations all through the night,” Marshman said.
He added a safety audit will also be conducted in partnership with police so residents can identify security concerns.
Chief Mark Saunders said safety requires help from community, adding residents need to work with officials.
“It has to be collective,” he said.
“We have to work in partnerships. Community solves crimes. Street gangs will not shoot when police are around. They will wait until they are gone and that’s when the community needs to help us.”
Yeah, so whose going to pay for all of this? and what’s often the case with these criminals is that what they’re looking for a place to strike when and where people least expect it. Now, typically in a Private Building, this isn’t as common, because the owner of the building is incentivized to keep criminals out and typically, what happens as the standard of living appreciates, private landlords voluntarily tighten security to protect their profit margins, because if instead of all these crap condo buildings being built actual affordable rental housing was built, criminals would be regulated to do their dirty work in fewer places and police wouldn’t have to patrol Community housing projects, because chances are there wouldn’t be any.
Community housing is extremely expensive to manage because a lot of the people who live in “the projects” do a horrible job taking care of their government buildings. You can smell the urine in many of these community housing apartments. Condos in Toronto are starting to have problems too because let’s be honest, most of these condos are being used for Airbnb and rentals and in the modern Toronto highrise condo, many aren’t being patrolled by security.
Why do I bring this up? Renters are having fewer options and if more resources are going to be pumped into condo development and community housing, Toronto is going to recreate a problem it had in the 1980s and early 1990s. In Downtown Toronto a lot of the highrise rental Apartments you see in certain areas were actually supposed to be Condos, the problem is during that era they couldn’t sell those condos because we had more of a free market then, developers even had a hard time renting these highrise buildings, a lot of the people that moved in these highrises, later on, were on welfare and couldn’t pay the bills, a lot of the people moved to Toronto because they didn’t like living in Quebec, PEI or Nova Scotia. But when they came to Toronto, even back then, they couldn’t afford the rent prices, but they still wanted the exact same benefits as the people who could afford market rents.
This is the social dilemma that plagues Canada, nobody wants to be honest with people. Police earn a paycheck, they get paid to do their jobs, Toronto Police I think are the highest paid in North America, I could be wrong, but I know they’re up there, now Toronto Community housing already spends a lot of money trying to keep that whole operation together, I think people forget it’s taxpayer dollars funding Toronto Community housing.
So I’m clear Toronto Community housing portfolio includes more than 350 high-rise and low-rise apartment buildings. Toronto Community Housing organizes its portfolio into 13 Operating Units and is funded by the public. It’s a government charity basically and resources are limited and investment is unlikely because investing in community housing is an invitation to burn your money. It’s not even to say that the people running the Toronto Community housing aren’t good people, it’s just that a lot of people living in Toronto Community housing don’t know how good they have it.
A shelter, electricity, heating a stove a fridge working electrical, an elevator, parking, access to public transportation, access to malls, etc and maintenance staff, I mean come on? Like seriously it’s really a good gig, a person living in Toronto Community housing is better than many middle-class people in third world countries. So why the violence? Well, the violence is often a reflection of a collectivist culture, people are often angry because they feel someone else has something they want. Like a vampire, some will opt to take someone’s life to feed their bloodthirst or kill another human to get some silly street cred in their collectivist group.
These demons of society are often protected by people in the projects, as people in the Projects are told not to snitch to the government, so many people don’t snitch which makes police work more expensive, via necessary investigations. Instead of the people who live off of taxpayer dollars assisting taxpayers by helping police get criminals off the street, these supposed poor people will turn their anger to the same government that’s allowing them to reside in one of the best cities in the world?
Sorry for her loss, just wish politicians and community leaders would have an honest conversation to these people about financial restraints. If they have a culture that doesn’t respect taxpayer dollars so be it, but at the very least they should be aware that Humans don’t work for free and the government doesn’t have unlimited resources. Living in a metropolis like Toronto is a privilege, not a right! A lot of money and hard work goes into maintaining this city and if large segments aren’t contributing financially via income taxes, maybe they should consider moving to a city more affordable for them.
I’d love to move to the best part of Beverly Hills, but I can’t afford it, maybe it’s time some the government have this conversation with people living off of the taxpayer hard work.
