NDP Leader Andrea Horwath Promises Ontario Higher Carbon Taxes If She’s Elected – June 16, 2019,
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath in a rally in Hamilton attempts to sell her eager followers on her Green New Democratic Deal. A preview of the article can be read below:
The plan outlines targets and says it will further develop over the next three years during consultations with party members, but the 27-page policy document provides no costing for the measures it discusses.

Horwath promises massive emissions cuts as New Democrats gather in Hamilton, however, it’s clear that the cost is of little importance, as we all know socialists will typically make the costs seem unimportant as their focus will revolve around their regressive carbon tax scheme. Regressive taxes are the worst type of taxes because everybody pays for them. COnsumers including poor consumers aren’t exempt from carbon taxes. Transport, the way things are delivered are greatly affected by carbon taxes. As an example, in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia they have the following taxes:
Here’s a list of all the taxes people pay on a litre of gas in B.C.:
- Provincial motor fuel tax (Metro Vancouver) — 1.75 cents
- Provincial motor fuel tax (everywhere else in B.C.) — 7.75 cents.
- B.C.’s carbon tax — 8.89 cents.
- The B.C. Transportation Finance Authority tax — 6.75 cents.
- TransLink tax (If you live in Metro Vancouver) — 17 cents, increasing to 18.5 cents on July 1.
- Transit tax (If you live in Victoria) — 5.5 cents.
- Federal excise tax — 10 cents.
- Finally, pay the five per cent Goods and Services Tax on top of the total price.
The thing to remember about British Colombia is that they vote Leftist a lot if it’s not Liberals, it’s the NDP if it’s not the NDP they’re leaning towards the Greens. The problem with the NDP’s democratic socialism model is that it’s very expensive to implement and also can lead to a sluggish economy as the cost of living will inevitably skyrocket. In regards to the NDP as leaders, their focus on democracy, which obviously equates to them trying to appease what they believe is the majority, puts everyone else at risk. Namely, businesses, who aren’t protected by the government.
In BC as an example, Horgan called for an independent investigation into high gas prices, which is silly when you look at all the regressive taxes BC’ers pay that I illustrated above. Now, we can pretend that fossil fuel powered transportation doesn’t bring food into the cities, but it’s simply not true. When a government creates a tax, especially a regressive sales tax everybody pays.

It gets worse when regressive taxes are tiered(meaning the price goes up as more is consumed) it’s also important to remember that most businesses can’t afford to invest in green technologies when their costs via the government go up. Even Loblaw had to be compensated for their energy efficient fridges. When the cost of living goes up, it affects everyone and I don’t know where this concept comes from that most business people aren’t in debt.
Most business owners are in debt and have to service their debt via sales, when consumers stop buying because prices are too high, business owners usually will have to raise prices to cover their losses, it’s important to remember that businesses have to pay for their employees and paying income taxes revolve around people being employed, so as regressive taxes rise, typically fewer income taxes are given to the government, because fewer people are hired and in many instances are replaced by machines. When people ask why Loblaw was given money for their energy efficient freezers, don’t forget that without Loblaw, a lot of people aren’t employed which means fewer income taxes are paid.
What separates Canada from Europe is minimum wages, in many European nations minimum wages, don’t exist, mainly because more people have small businesses, in Canada employers get hit on both sides and Left-leaning politicians also lean on regressive taxation to grow government revenue, this combined with minimum wages equates to the Labour Union dream that if an employer can’t pay the wage a union demands, that employer will not exist. The downside to this is usually a currency crisis. I write about Argentina a lot, Canada is luckier, because we border with the United States which allows us to manipulate our currency, to feed our growing government, the problem, however, is now Canada has a consumer debt problem, which will be a sight to behold in the event there’s a global economic downturn.
These are the disasters created by Modern day Leftists, who are placing their bets on democratic socialism or as NDP Leader Andrea Horwath calls it the Green New Democratic Deal. Regarding politics, I’ve been saying it for months now, the Green Party could realistically replace the NDP. Justin Trudeau basically hijacked the NDP platform, and their identity is in limbo, the Green Party, on the other hand, appeals to the youth who are looking for something new. What NDP Ontario Leader Andrea Horwath is trying to do is make an appeal to the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez crowd in Ontario. After all Ontario borders with New York State.
At this point, I’m not sure what voters will do, but if they make the choice to vote for the NDP, Ontarians must understand that unlike B.C, under Liberal Leadership Ontario became a “Have Not” province and the problem is so pervasive that Doug Fords call for austerity measures were met with fierce opposition. A “Have Not” province means we’re bankrupt, now if additional carbon taxes are compounded on a bankrupt province, what do you think will happen to Public Services, when it’s clear to the Private Sector that Ontario will never be able to pay its bills?
