The Reason Canada is sending Canadian trash overseas” it’s economical and Canada is Broke – August 2, 2019,
Canada has a very large Government that requires high taxation to fund it, in most Canadian provinces the economy is out of whack primarily because of wages. If you look at almost every global “Quality of Life Ranking” by country, Canada is usually in the top 10, if not first, no further down the list than 10th. Canada is bordered with the United States and this allows Canada to in many instances underfund its military, not have to guard its borders with the United States and grow its public sector using an equalization payment structure that allows bankrupt Canadian provinces to take the productive wealth from the solvent and prospering Canadian and give to the unproductive Provinces, thereby not giving any incentive for the unproductive Provinces to be productive, this of course, leads to a lack of innovation.
There’s, of course, a notion by most people that once you’ve made it to the top of Quality of Life list as a country you’ll stay there indefinitely, well unfortunately Canada is taking this theory to max and pockets of internal problems are beginning to rear their ugly heads, primarily by Leftists, who assume that Government growth has worked up to this point so why doesn’t Canada simply expand it’s public sector growth initiatives? It’s only Garbage, why doesn’t Canada simply stop sending Canadian trash overseas?

The answer is the private sector could solve this problem within Canadian borders, but the people working with Canada’s garbage would demand pay increases, or at the very least, Canada would have to find a way to create a more favorable atmosphere for Garbage collection, something that will be difficult with minimum wages hovering around $14 per hour Nationally. Now, if I’m working in Waste Collection, I’m sorry but you’re going to have to pay me a good wage. Not a decent wage but a wage that’s worth my time. I’m actually sympathetic when people in Garbage clean up unionize.
It’s not a competitive industry in Canada, so much so that in cities like Toronto, certain sections are almost impossible to make Private. Waste management is something that’s often pushed to the side and ignored, but it’s a huge contributor to our quality of life in Canada and the industry isn’t allowed to flourish. Canada produces a vast amount of waste. Per capita, Canada wastes more food and water than the United States, why? Because there’s a lack of Private Sector initiative to deal with waste. If for example, the Private Sector was responsible for waste pick up, they’d be more demanding of the people using their services.
In Ontario as an example because the Government/Public Sector plays such a huge role in waste management there’s less incentive for people to recycle CORRECTLY, why? Because there’s no incentive for them to do it, the city comes around picks up their garbage and that’s the end of it, if this task was done by the Private Sector, if someone was in violation of the waste managements clean up policies it could lead to higher prices an outright refusal and actual consequences to the individuals violating the rules.
Now, the argument against the Private Sector is that a lot of Canadians to avoid being charged would find sneaky ways to shift the financial burden on someone else. It happens today, instead of paying to dump trash a lot of people will drive to large commercial establishments and dump their trash there, but you see this is why I speak about lack of innovations in Canada.
Because by now, there would have been innovative ways to combat illegal dumping, but because the government has taken such a huge role in waste management, this is a topic that’s simply swept under the rug. Innovations in the private sector would also fuel even more efficiencies in regards to how we recycle waste locally. Once the population understands the importance of following the rules, what ends up happening is that more opportunities start to rise and more competition happens as individuals in the Private Sector start fighting for marketing share.
So if one waste management company is dominating, smaller ones will also get involved to take market share and similar to how things are now, recycling and managing waste can make a lot of people a lot of money. A lot of times people throw out things that are still usable, still fixable, still in-demand in other countries, however, this would all be done in a more efficient manner and Canada wouldn’t be dependent on Stop sending Canadian trash overseas and would instead have it as an option. The problem Canada has now is we’d have to change Canadian culture to combat this solid waste management problem.
I can’t speak for other Provinces, but in Ontario, we’re extremely entitled when it comes to waste management, the average Canadian assumes that because we pay such high taxes that they shouldn’t have to pay out of pocket to have someone pick up their trash.
