The Economic Decline of Hamilton, Ontario: 32% of the Population Reported Having No Religion or a Secular Perspective (Canadian Atheism) — The Christ Alternative – August 9, 2025

Posted on August 9, 2025 by RichInWriters

Ontario has been in decline for years. While many Canadians like to blame Justin Trudeau for the nation’s problems, I believe the deeper cause began long before his leadership — it began when Canadians, in large numbers, started abandoning Christ.

As a Christian who grew up in the public school system surrounded by children raised by atheist or agnostic parents, none of this surprises me. I’ve never judged people by race — the Bible teaches us that humanity’s story is far deeper than skin color. When you read the Bible in full, you quickly see it’s a book of history, wisdom, and examples. It is filled with stories of faith, rebellion, consequences, and redemption.

Why the Old Testament Still Matters

Many Christians focus only on the New Testament, but the Old Testament is essential for understanding the full nature of God and humanity. In its pages, we see miracles — like Elijah raising a dead child — alongside warnings, such as Israel’s repeated turn to idol worship.

When we think of “idols,” we often picture carved statues or pagan gods like those of Rome, Greece, or Hinduism. But in the biblical sense, an idol is anything you put above God. This includes modern secularism, political ideologies, materialism, and even blind faith in human institutions.

Trends and popular movements are nothing new. In biblical times, the masses followed cultural fads that led them away from God — and every time, economic and social collapse followed. The same pattern repeats in our day.

Hamilton’s Political and Economic Choices

Ontario, and Hamilton in particular, have embraced political leadership that ignores biblical principles. The NDP, for example, is essentially a labour union party. Labour unions advocate forced redistribution of private property, whether through minimum wage laws, rent controls, or other regulations that redefine ownership rights.

Many Canadians fail to see that minimum wage laws are, in fact, a form of property rights redefinition. When the government dictates the terms of private agreements between employer and employee, it is asserting that it can alter those rights whenever it pleases. Over time, this mentality seeps into all areas of governance.

The Kingdom of God requires liberty, freedom, and property rights. These rights are tied directly to human happiness and dignity. If I buy a home and the government later imposes new restrictions on how I can use it — even granting renters rights that override my contract — that is not justice; it is theft by regulation.

Such policies often create mental and economic instability. People do not truly feel the damage until they lose their jobs, see their businesses fail, or watch their communities crumble. By then, reversing the damage is far harder.

The False Choice: Greedy Capitalists or Big Government

Socialists often present a false choice: either you support their redistribution schemes, or you support “greedy capitalists.” But true capitalism is not about unchecked greed — it’s about voluntary exchange. In a biblical economic model, there are no property taxes on what you rightfully own, and the market naturally rewards productivity and efficiency.

If a business behaves unjustly, we can boycott it. In a free society, we have the power to walk away. But when the state forces businesses to comply with arbitrary rules, everyone is dragged into submission — and freedom dies.

Spiritual Roots of Innovation

The Bible shows us that miracles and innovation come from God. When Moses parted the Red Sea, it was a miracle of faith — but it also demonstrated God’s power to make a way where none seemed possible.

Socialism, by contrast, believes in hammers, sickles, and controlling the narrative. Without belief in God, people limit their vision to human constructs. This invites spiritual darkness, because it shuts out the possibility that God can transform a situation.

Many Christians weaken their own faith by clinging to a few isolated verses while ignoring the Bible’s full depth. This leads to shallow understanding and vulnerability to worldly ideologies.

Why Secularism Fails

Science, while valuable, is only a small part of God’s creation. Modern science is often centralized and politicized — “truth” is declared settled only when powerful institutions approve it. This is no different from the Catholic hierarchy that historically kept Scripture out of the hands of common people.

Today, secularists push policies like mass migration without regard for whether a society has the cultural or spiritual foundation to sustain it. They see infrastructure as a machine that simply needs more operators, when in reality, a nation is held together by shared values.

In Hamilton, this spiritual decay is visible. Many wander aimlessly, motivated only by money or by endless protest. Without God, life’s purpose shrinks to the pursuit of temporary gain or perpetual resistance. Such people cannot build; they can only tear down.

Hamilton’s Religious Landscape

According to the 2021 census:

  • Total population: 562,445
  • Catholic: 29.0%
  • Other Christians: 11.3%
  • No religion/secular: 32.8% (183,965 people)

This last figure is telling — nearly one-third of Hamilton’s population identifies as atheist, agnostic, or otherwise non-religious. And with secularism comes an inevitable hostility toward God. In Canada, this is becoming increasingly obvious: when secular ideas fail, the blame is often shifted to Christians and Jews, who are viewed as cultural or economic “obstacles.”

A Warning and an Invitation

History and Scripture both show that when a society abandons God, decline follows — spiritually, economically, and culturally. In Canada, we are already seeing this pattern repeat. The political left, along with secularists and other idol-worshippers, will eventually come for the church. They will censor your voice, restrict your freedoms, and undermine your ability to live by biblical principles.

The only true safeguard is Christ Himself. He is the foundation of liberty, the source of innovation, and the giver of peace that the world cannot take away.

I urge you: consider making Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior today.

Without Him, Hamilton — and Canada as a whole — will continue its downward spiral. With Him, we can rebuild not only our economy, but our hearts, our families, and our communities, according to the principles of the Kingdom of God.
