When it comes to improving the relationship between people of color and law enforcement “there are seeds of optimism but only if we’re interested in building over the long term,” says Phillip Attiba Solomon, professor of African American Studies at Yale University. Retired Montgomery police captain Sonia Pruitt agreed but with cautious optimism. “The question becomes, can you reform something that’s working as it was designed to do,” she said. “And can we get people to come inside of these departments? Because you can only disrupt a system if you have someone on the inside.”
