The Broadway play “Purpose,” written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, won this year’s Pulitzer Prize for drama and received six Tony Award nominations. Jacobs-Jenkins speaks about why he felt drawn to writing about dynamics in a Black political family across time: “Parents move through so many moments in history before their children come of age, and part and parcel with that is the evolution of how we’ve understood mental health. There are syndromes and ideas that very much were alive when I was a child that don’t even exist anymore. … how do we really talk about mental health inside of history that plays out within the generations within a family?”
