Union leader says Canada won’t appease Trump in NAFTA talks – September 3, 2018

Now that you’re here do yourself a favor and watch the CBC video below if CBC blocks their video than go to their Youtube page and type Union leader says Canada won’t appease Trump in NAFTA talks. My commentary is below where the video should be.

To start let me say a few things first I disagree with the Union leader, it’s typical for union leaders to have a short-sighted approach to business issues.

This tariff issue is larger than Donald Trump. Tariffs are typically a Democratic/Leftist position. when it comes to raising taxes on voters Tariffs are an easier sell than income taxes, because tariffs are more of a voluntary tax paid by consumers, consumers can choose not to buy Canadian maple syrup for example or choose not to buy European cars. Tariffs are a much easier sell to voters than raising income taxes. We do it here in Canada, it’s one of the ways we pay for our social programs.

The longer this trade war lasts the more likely it is that the Democrats will embrace tariffs, they may not make it a central theme, but they’ll protect their industries and at this point, I’m pretty sure the Democratic party will say or do anything to get the white house back. Tariffs can help to pay for social programs, Tariffs can pay down the U.S national debt, Tariffs help to give U.S manufacturers a competitive advantage in their own country and tariffs could end Ontario’s auto sector as we know it. Tariffs also make having a lower Loonie useless. Furthermore, it takes time before people start rejecting tariffs.

Populations typically only start rejecting tariffs when unionized workers make too many demands. That’s when countries start to rethink how their tariff policy. Now in realistic terms, if Trump’s tariffs remain intact, I’d say maybe 5 – 10 years before American’s start to rethink their tariff policies. Trump doesn’t have to do anything right now and Canadian companies are in trouble, don’t forget that private companies don’t like bailouts, the government usually adds stipulations when they bail out a company which often puts constraints on how a private company is run.

Furthermore and I keep saying this Ontarians and Americans speak English, have similar cultures and it won’t take much to move Canadian manufacturing to America if this trade war continues.

Justin Trudeau consulted with special advisor Brian Mulroney and Jerry Dias on trade!

So, Justin Trudeau consulted with special advisor Brian Mulroney and Jerry Dias on trade huh? Very interesting, I spent a little time reading the comments coming in from Canadians on the CBC Youtube page, I don’t even bother commenting anymore because chances are Canadian nationalistic pride will cloud their minds from obvious. Canada is broke, not only are we broke we have a lot of liabilities to pay for, making matters worse is our bloated real estate market. Trudeau’s Liberals created a lot of public sector jobs with borrowed money and well, sometimes people just have to learn things the hard way.

Brian Mulroney and Jerry Dias were the people Justin Trudeau consulted with regarding trade? Hopefully he consulted with a few more people, but we’ll see.

Interesting times ahead.
