Four LAZY Ontario Mayors Reject Doug Ford’s “strong mayor powers”: Newmarket, New Tecumseth, Norfolk County, and Haldimand County reject Taking Personal Responsibility for their HORRIBLE Fiscal policies – November 10, 2023
First to start, the media in Canada doesn’t like to properly define what certain terms mean, because if they were for example to define the meaning of Strong Mayor Powers it would likely get more people comprehending that MAYORS and MUNICIPAL voters are the root cause of the housing SHORTAGE problems in Ontario.
You can read about the powers of Strong Mayor Powers in Toronto by clicking the link below.
Strong Mayor Powers Overview
1. The Mayor has the power to appoint and assign duties to the municipality’s chief administrative officer. 2. The Mayor has the power to hire or dismiss a “head of any division or the head of any other part of the organizational structure”.
In general, strong mayor powers give MAYORS the power to shrink or RESTRUCTURE the operations of their government. There are a lot of USELESS committees in a lot of these municipalities, that in many way’s are the MAIN REASONS why there are housing shortages all over Ontario, I also have to put housing shortages in their proper context as it relates to Ontario, because there actually isn’t a housing shortage in Ontario, there are however a lot of Mayoral MISMANAGEMENT problems.
Price Controls Create SHORTAGES – Rent Controls are Price Controls (Government Caps On Earning Potential)
I’ll give you a quick example, let’s talk about RENT CONTROLS. Rent controls equate to price freezes or PRICE CONTROLS for existing tenants, rent controls are actually one of the main reasons why NEW housing isn’t being developed, because rent controls don’t allow landlords to make up for shortfalls.
For example at the grocery stores, via Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax, the providers of Canada’s food had to raise prices to pay for Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax which was targeted at THEM and because there aren’t price controls on FOOD, those higher food prices were passed onto consumers.
Now, if there were price controls on FOOD, which would include IMPORTED food, that would lead to a shortage of FOOD, because if I’m producing food and the government wants to decide the price I can sell my food for, then I have the option to STOP producing or selling food to Canadian consumers.
Now, if you understand what led to HYPERINFLATION in Venezuela, you’d know that the Venezuelan government in response to higher food and other prices in the PRIVATE SECTOR NATIONALIZED many parts of the Venezuelan PRIVATE sector, now, that’s all well and good, if the GOVERNMENT knows how the supply chains work and can insert their own GOVERNMENT workforce to replace the private sector participants in the food supply chains.
Nationalization (nationalisation in British English) is the process of transforming privately-owned assets into public assets by bringing them under the public ownership of a national government or state. Nationalization contrasts with privatization and with demutualization.
So when you bring this type of thinking into the HOUSING market, you have to start asking the question, if these mayors want to have all of these socialists, left-wing REGULATIONS on the private housing sector, well, then these mayors have to take PERSONAL responsibility for the results of their housing FISCAL policies.
By the way, this isn’t a Left-Right, Liberal, Conservative problem, this is actually a DEMOCRACY problem, years ago, a CONSERVATIVE came to my door and told and showed me that he wanted Toronto to have tougher Rent Controls, and I asked this gentleman several times are you sure you’re a Conservative and he responds YES!
Of course, this person lost his mayoral race, but I always like to point out that a lot municipally elected officials have NO IDEA what they’re doing. No idea what they’re talking about, they’re merely trying to win a popularity contest,
Now, when these mayors push these HORRIBLE fiscal policies, and they fail, these mayors then BLAME the provincial and Federal governments for their financial shortfalls.
Why doesn’t any branch of government want to get into the business of building and maintaining housing? Because government housing, “The Projects,” has proven to be a complete financial disaster.
When you have government housing a lot of the people living in these projects don’t have to work and are often REWARDED for not working by paying lower rent. You then have to factor in that people living in government housing are usually on WELFARE, and because the welfare recipients can vote, the politicians cater to the needs of these UNPRODUCTIVE, non-INCOME-TAX paying voters.
So housing then becomes a political problem, that even a LEFT WING government is responsible for, this ofcourse leads to more GOVERNMENT BORROWING, and this cycle repeats itself over and over again.

The modern monetary system rewards Canadian FISCAL incompetence, by that I mean, Canadian dollars still trade well on the foreign exchange markets, which allow Canadians to purchase FOREIGN MADE goods at rock bottom prices.
However, DOMESTIC-based industries, are showing the TRUE value of the Canadian dollar. Real estate prices REFUSE to come down, and food prices refuse to come down, why? Because fiscal policies ALL OVER Canada are REWARDING bad actors in the economy.
Why should a hard-working laborer get paid LESS and be offered less security than a recipient of government welfare? Why are government worker salaries much higher than the Private sector? Most public sector WHITE COLLAR jobs not only have above-market wages, they also offer the best pensions in the country.
FISCAL policies have created an INCENTIVE not to be productive in the PRIVATE sector, which has resulted in a lot of PRIVATE SECTOR strikes, as well as private sector participants DEMANDING higher pay for what they do for the overall Canadian economy.

What I point to as the root cause of the HOUSING market problems are BLOATED municipal governments who REFUSE to change the structure of their operations. In the private sector, there’s nobody to BLAME but yourself if your company can’t make payroll; however with the municipal, Provincial, and Federal governments of Canada, REWARD themselves for being BANKRUPT.
You have to remember that without the ability to borrow, the entire government of Canada is BANKRUPT, now, if private banks REFUSE to lend money to a private company, which is a possibility, then that private company has to FIRE people, sell off parts of it’s business not making positive cashflow or declare BANKRUPTCY.
What is FISCAL policy?
In economics and political science, fiscal policy is the use of government revenue collection and expenditure to influence a country’s economy.
Whereas the government of Canada doesn’t have to operate this way, the Canadian government, which now involves itself in the private sector, can be bankrupt and reward itself with more BORROWED money.
Sounds like the Government of Canada solved poverty, right? Wrong, Because when the government borrows money to buy votes, it’s actually taking resources from the private sector it’s reliant on for TAX COLLECTION.
For example, because there’s a growing shortfall of revenue for the Federal Government, the Bank of Canada is being FORCED to raise interest rates. If you’re not comprehending the coalition of higher interest rates and bad fiscal policies, it’s because you’re imagining that the GOVERNMENT is responsible for your higher standard of living and not the PRIVATE SECTOR.
If the private sector is struggling to find profitability in a country, the private sector will refuse to participate in certain sectors of that economy. This equates to SHORTAGES, which also equates to a shortage of REVENUE for the government. The beauty of the current modern monetary system, is that because of the FOREX markets, the price people are willing to pay for the Loonie, allows Canadians to purchase things INTERNATIONALLY they can’t produce DOMESTICALLY.
Why can’t Mayors build more housing? It’s because of their FISCAL policies, and Doug Ford wisely gave these mayors the ability to FIX their cities, but as you’re seeing with Newmarket, New Tecumseth, Norfolk County, and Haldimand County, they’re refusing these powers because they enjoy the conveniences of creating HOUSING problem and then blaming Doug Ford and Justin Trudeau.
In the end this is a voter problem and the only way to fix these systematic problems is via financial and economic education, I’d say we need at least 20% of the Canadian population to comprehend FISCAL policies and how bad fiscal policies lead to economic destruction.
Interesting times ahead!
