Do I have to renew my tenant lease agreement in Toronto?
For the record the advice given here is not legal advice if you require legal advice please seek the professional advice of registered lawyer!
If you’re wondering if you’re forced to renew your apartment lease in Toronto Ontario Canada in 2014? The answer is No! However you must pay your rent at the increased price. If a landlord gives a tenant a notice to end the tenancy because the tenant refused to sign another 1 year lease and the tenant hasn’t missed any rental payments and hasn’t caused any problems the tenant does not have to move out however…
The landlord can apply to the Landlord and Tenant Board for an order allowing the eviction of the tenant. The tenant has the right to go to a hearing and explain why their tenancy should not end. I can not give any legal advice on what would or could happen in this instance however it’s doubtful that if you’re a paying tenant that you would or should have to leave your unit just because you refused to sign another one year lease. That being said if possible don’t be caught off guard and be prepared to move in the event you lose the court hearing.
In general the current laws surrounding tenants rights are not absolute to learn more visit http://www.ltb.gov.on.ca/
