What an odd title for a post on a respected news organization, B.C has drivers willing to pay for high gas prices, almost as if they should just stop driving and take public transit. If house and rent prices in the city cost more than it would to buy a car and live in suburbs, how could a working person simply stop driving to go to work? Governments create things like rent controls, property taxes, and other regulations that have costs and Canadians adjust accordingly. Most Canadian cities would resemble Chicago if demand was dictate the housing market, but Canada has central planners who thought condos would be a better fit because condos could house more people.
Well the market reacted(the market being the people) and the detached housing market went through the roof, now that the housing market is nearing it’s peak and there still isn’t much demand for condos, and the people who could afford a house moved outside the city, the fluctuating gas market goes up something that happens, Canadians buy less essential items and the assumption by some is that Canadians are willing to pay higher prices for gas.
If a person has to go to work to pay the bills, a person has to go to work to pay the bills, if a person has to drive long distances to go to work that’s what they have to do. Now sure they can take the bus, but taking public transit from suburbs to the city as an example means a person has to wake up earlier and get home later, it also limits what that person can do. Now that person who is not driving can’t pick up essential or even nonessential items they would otherwise have picked up.
In life there are only trade offs
Interesting times ahead.
