Tariffs reveal Canada’s maple syrup now comes from the United States – Here’s Why
I was reading a post that can be found by going here: Trade war: Canadians horrified to learn some maple syrup is from … the US. For most conservative thinkers they should already know why this happened, however, this is a tough pill to swallow if you subscribe to the Liberal, NDP, Quebecois or Green Party dogma. So what happened here? Why are Canadians importing maple syrup from the United States in the first place?
Well, to understand this is to understand Quebec and their unfriendliness to businesses, lots of bureaucracy in Quebec, Quebec is one of, if not the worst province in Canada to run a business and it’s that way because Quebecers like big government, they like their protections, when an industry is profitable Quebecers believe the profits should be shared among all people of Quebec. It’s a nice thought, socialism in theory, similar to Marxism sounds great in theory however put to practice in a free market people aren’t as nationalist with their wallets and you’d like them to be. If a person can get something similar for a cheaper price they’ll opt for it, so as these profits dwindle the private sector follows demand, which in turn leads to Canadians knowingly or unknowingly purchasing American made or foreign made products.
Conservatives have been trying to remind Canadians for years the bigger the government gets, the smaller our manufacturing gets. Now the mistake often made by conservatives is referring to the manufacturing sector of the economy as the private sector because when the average person hears the worlds the private sector they envision a rich Scrooge McDuck type figure with a Money Bin, where he hoards all the wealth for himself.
Also, you should remember that a lot of the people that do the manufacturing in Canada, the working class after a few years at a particular job might feel entitled to the same wealth as the owner. This is the reality, and leftist politicians like to exploit these realities, what leftist politicians don’t do is explain how all of this stuff works. It’s not hard for any Canadian to start his or her own company the real problem with starting a company are the sacrifices you have to make.
Most people aren’t willing to make the sacrifices necessary to build a business, instead, most Canadians would rather work for a business and unionize around protecting their own interest as workers. This stuff is all fine and dandy but then those same Canadians will go to the supermarket and pick up the cheapest maple syrup on the grocery store shelves, ignoring the higher priced made in Canada maple syrup. So as profits fall the private sector has to meet market demand and if the market demand is we want lower priced maple syrup in order for that Canadian company to keep his/her unionized employees employed, that Canadian company may have to save money by importing maple syrup made from America.
This is the real world Canada, if you want to have your Canadian maple syrup and eat it too you have to read those labels and ask questions and stop buying the cheapest things in the stores. In life the only route to fairness are trade-offs, money is a form of barter, if one entity can offer a similar product for less and the unloyal customers via their pocketbooks buy the cheaper product over the made in Canada product well in that bartered transaction the made in Canada product just lost their Canadian currency to an American supplier.
So if you’re subscribed to a leftist politician whose trying to sell you victimhood, or trying to sell you on unionizing to put shackles on the evil rich capitalist ask yourself if you’re willing to pay more just to buy Canadian. Because if your not, you’re helping to drive business out of Canada in 2 ways.
Interesting times ahead.
