Trudeau affirms NAFTA amid U.S.-Mexico talks
I thought it was a silly move by virtuous Trudeau to go tit-for-tat when it comes to tariffs, I don’t think this trade war is going to help Trudeau’s chances to remain the Prime minister of Canada. Sure it made him look pro-corporatism by uses the Canadian taxpayer to pay for his scuffle with Donald Trump. That aside, why I thought Canada should have done nothing was because now Trump can simply ignore Canada. Trump doesn’t have to engage with Canada, because the united states on a federal level don’t have the same types of liabilities as the Canadian federal government.
America is a superpower, a lot of countries all over the world are dependent on the United States being successful. A lot of countries require the U.S armed forces to protect and enforce their borders. what this translates to is the USD remaining its status amongst fiat currencies. Canada on the other hand, we have to give a little to get a little. For the most part, Canada has maxed out its liabilities. There are a lot of public costs embedded into the Canadian government that has to cash flow in order for the Canadian government to pay its bills.
Paul Martin did a great job remaking the Canadian economy to be friendlier to business and the Free Market, it’s not to be forgotten however that the reason Paul Martin did this was to protect Canadian entitlements. When Pierre Trudeau went on his spending binge what he didn’t include was free market contributions. The problem with Conservative Politicians in Canada has always been that they’re a little bit too boring, so when given the chance Canadians hired Brian Mulroony who in reality wasn’t a free market guy and thought he could create a better version of Pierre Trudeau.
Why I bring up this is because their policies led to the economic crash in the 80’s. It took a lot for Canada to get out of that mess and Trudeau’s reckless spending and arrogant attitude towards economics appears to be catching up to him. What separates men from boys in the real world is economics. It’s not just about going to war, but in the midsts of war can you still take care of things at home. Both Trudeau and Trump come from rich parents, the difference between the two, however, is the path’s they took. Trudeau’s life is filled with fun a relaxation, he worked, but he never really had to work, Trudeau also never started and ran a successful business.
Trump with his rich Dad, became richer and more successful than his dad, I think it’s fair to say that Justin will never be the man Pierre Trudeau was. He’ll also never be as accomplished. These are the two men going face to face. If Trudeau manages to win this trade war great for him but I’m not so sure Trudeau knows how to negotiate in a man’s world. While as you can see even with all the pressure Trump is sticking to his guns, it would be funny in my opinion if Mexico signed a bilateral trade deal with the United States. While Canada begged Trump to answer their call.
Interesting times ahead…
