The Lingering effects of the Canadian Welfare State: Badly run Ontario long-term care homes make millions in profits because of Government Regulations and incentives to be on Welfare – May 28, 2020,
Now, let’s say every single person in Ontario was employed ok, let’s say 97% of people in Ontario Canada were employed, maybe we could have a minimum wage, I’d be against it, but I’d understand the fight for one, but Canada has long had a labor shortage and brain drain problem. In reality, what’s happened at these long-term care homes is a function of the brain-drain problem in Canada.
I have family that works in the medical field and management at most of these companies are horrible, if they weren’t being subsidized by the government and instead how to operate in a competitive environment most of these long-term care homes wouldn’t exist.
I also have Canadian friends and family that work in America as medical professionals, less stress, more money, lower cost of living and smarter management are often the words relayed to me, when Canadian medical professionals go to the United States. Why does this happen, because in America there are a lot more options for elderly people.
Canadians don’t only move to Florida because of the weather, they move there because of the lower cost of living! Furthermore, the elderly who should be living in Canada are financed by the Canadian government to live in Florida because Canada for the most part doesn’t have the resources to take care of the elderly.
It’s an open secret, that Canada’s cost of living is too high, now the cost of living hurts businesses because a high cost of living is a higher barrier to entry to start ab business and the higher the barrier to entry the fewer businesses you’ll see in particular industries, fewer competitors equates to fewer innovations, which equates to a lot of inefficient businesses
Making matters worse, the elderly Canadians who live in Florida, often vote for the Liberals, because they don’t want their free taxpayer money cut! This welfare that they received often leads to a Leftist politician like former Premier Kathleen Wynne or current PM Justin Trudeau granting more rewards for welfare recipients while adding more regulations for productive income tax-paying Canadians.
In time, what happens is that it’s more beneficial for say a single mom not to work than it is for her to work, this person might have more children to get more government benefits, so you’ll get generations of Canadians who either never produce for Canada or they consume more in welfare than they produce income taxes.
This welfare mentality eventually spreads and more and more Canadians say to themselves, why should I work at a long-term care home when I’m being rewarded by the government via welfare for doing absolutely nothing?
A lot of the people who live in subsidized or metro housing also don’t have a job, now part of the reason I’m against a minimum wage is that this creates an excuse for a person on welfare not to work!
What tends to happen when there’s no minimum wage and welfare is hard to get is that low skilled labour will gravitate to health care or in-home care employment because a job like that compared to flipping burgers is a dream job.
However when you compare working at a long-term care home to getting free welfare from the government, who can blame anyone for taking the free welfare.
It’s little things like the story below that really irritate me because the problem isn’t the private house care homes the problem is the government!
The government, namely the Liberal Governments continues to destroy Canada and the Conservative Governments instead of austerity measures try to do a better job managing the Liberal Party created disasters and that’s how Canada in certain respects gets progressively worse!
Although National Post tries to frame their story in a way that blames the Private Nursing home, this is a government-created disaster, this has little to do with the small profit they make, at their best the company made a profit of $21.8 million? That’s not a lot of money for a company that large!
Being that the writer didn’t get into their cash flow statements, the company might actually not be profitable, a lot of these companies will report profitability, but when you dig into their financials you’ll see a lot of under-reported costs!
The economic nonsense in Canada has got to stop! Because it’s unsustainable!
Interesting times ahead!
